From 1954 until the defeat of the Americans in 1975, Ben Hai river marked the division of Vietnam. The area extended 5km from either side of the river was declared a Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) - a stark contrast to what really took place in this region. In fact, The DMZ was the scene of some of the heaviest and most bitter fighting during the Vietnam War. of some of the heaviest and most bitter fighting during the sixties and seventies. Camp Carroll, the Rock pile, Khe Sanh, Hamburger Hill, Con Thien and A Shau Valley are names which still evoke emotions from the American public.
In the morning, you will be met with the guide at the hotel in Hue. Drive northwards on the so called “Highway of No Joy” to Quang Tri town, photo stop at ruined church by the road, having a look at the remain of Quang Tri Citadel which was destroyed heavily in the summer of 1972 by B52-bombers.
Turning off at Dong Ha market to follow highway 9 towards Lao, visiting Camp Carol, passing “Rock Pile“, keep driving to Khe Sanh, the biggest American Base in the region - the gate to Vietnam from Lao. It is also the side of a “NEW DIEN BIEN PHU“ as many people say when talking about TET Offensive.
Proceed to Lang Vei Special Forces Camp Site where NVA first used tanks against US Force. Afternoon visit to BRU village of Van Kieu people (the other side of DAKRONG bridge), then head off to Vinh Moc underground tunnel.
Late afternoon, drive back Hue. End of service. (L)
